1000 Names of Ardhanarishvara (Ardhanarishvara Sahasranamavali)
श्री अर्धनारीश्वर सहस्रनामावली
What is the Ardhanarishvara Sahasranamavali?
The Ardhanarishvara Sahasranamavali is a devotional garland of 1003 sacred names for Ardhanarishvara, the single form in which Shiva and Parvati stand united, one body split right and left between them. Each name is chanted as “Om [name] Namah,” and a full recitation, done slowly and with attention, takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Devotees turn to it specifically to invoke balance between opposites and harmony in close relationships.
Ardhanarishvara is the form in which Shiva and Parvati share one body, the right half his, the left half hers, each incomplete as a picture without the other. The Ardhanarishvara Sahasranamavali collects 1003 names for this joint form, every one opened with “Om” and closed with “Namah,” so consciousness and creative energy are addressed as a single reality rather than two separate gods. Devotees chant it to settle a divided mind, ease friction between partners, and hold masculine and feminine strength as one truth, not a competition.

About the Ardhanarishvara Sahasranamavali
The image of a deity split down the middle, male on one side and female on the other, is one of the oldest composite forms in Shaiva worship. Carvings from the early centuries CE already show it, and by the time of the Chola bronzes and the cave sculptures at Elephanta, Ardhanarishvara had become a fully worked out visual language: matted locks on one side, a woman’s coiffure on the other, a single visible breast, a trishula in one hand, a mirror or lotus in another, a bull and a lion sharing the pedestal. The Sahasranamavali is the spoken counterpart of that carved image, the same union put into sound, name after name.
Namavalis of this length grew out of the Puranic and Agama habit of praising a deity through an exhaustive list of forms, weapons, relationships, and qualities. Ardhanarishvara is described across this literature, in passages of the Shiva Purana, the Skanda Purana, and the Linga Purana, and in the Shaiva Agamas that govern temple worship and iconography, sometimes as an episode explaining why the form arose, sometimes simply as an epithet of Shiva praised alongside Uma. Sahasranama texts of this kind are commonly framed as a dialogue, the Goddess asking and Shiva answering, or a sage requesting the names for the benefit of householders, and the Ardhanarishvara namavali is transmitted through devotional stotra collections in that same question-and-answer spirit rather than as a single fixed Vedic source.
Ardhanarishvara is not a hybrid creature but a philosophical statement rendered as an image: Shiva as Purusha, still consciousness, and Devi as Prakriti, the power that moves and makes, are shown as inseparable, because one without the other cannot act or even be perceived. Puranic accounts link the form to moments when Parvati asked to never be apart from Shiva, or when a sage’s austerity needed both a witness and a womb to be blessed, and later commentary reads it as the meeting point of Samkhya’s Purusha-Prakriti pair with bhakti toward a single Ishvara. The form is worshipped in its own right in a small number of temples, and far more widely as an idea invoked whenever a marriage, a partnership, or an inner conflict needs the reminder that opposing forces are, at root, one.
What sets this namavali apart from a Shiva Sahasranama or a Devi Sahasranama recited on its own is that almost every name here has to hold both halves at once. Where a pure Shiva list leans on renunciation, destruction, and the ascetic on the mountain, and a pure Devi list leans on shakti, fierceness, or motherhood, the Ardhanarishvara names keep circling back to the joint form itself, its shared ornaments, its two-sided appearance, its identity as husband and wife in a single standing figure. Chanted in full it reads less like a catalogue of separate powers and more like a long, patient description of one union, said 1003 times over, until the idea of two halves making one whole stops being a concept and starts to feel obvious.
How to Chant the 1003 Names
- Prepare a clean space. Bathe, wear clean clothes, and sit facing east or north. A picture or small murti of Ardhanarishvara helps focus attention, though it is not compulsory.
- Begin with sankalpa. State your intention in a few honest words, an aspiration for balance, for peace in marriage, for steadiness of mind, before the first name is chanted.
- Chant name by name, unhurried. Pronounce each name clearly followed by “Namah,” keeping a steady, even pace rather than rushing to finish; a mala can be used to keep count if you like.
- Split it across sessions if needed. 1003 names read slowly can run close to an hour, so it is entirely fine to divide the list into two or three sittings on the same day, or across a few days, rather than force it into one breathless pass.
- Close with gratitude. End with a short prayer or aarti, sit quietly for a moment, and if chanting as a couple, consider sitting side by side for the recitation, a small physical echo of the union the names describe.
Benefits of Chanting
- Harmony in marriage. Chanting these names, especially together as partners, is used to soften friction and bring both people back to a shared sense of purpose rather than opposing corners.
- Balance between opposites. The repeated praise of one form that is both active and receptive, strong and gentle, helps loosen the habit of seeing masculine and feminine, or logic and feeling, as forces in competition.
- Inner integration. Regular recitation is used as a quiet practice for accepting the different, sometimes contradictory, sides of one’s own nature instead of suppressing one to favor the other.
- Steadiness of mind. The unhurried rhythm of a thousand names, each closed with the same “Namah,” has a settling effect similar to any long, repetitive chant, useful before decisions made in agitation.
- A reminder of equal reverence. Because the names never let Shiva or the Goddess stand fully apart, the practice reinforces regarding both the masculine and feminine as equally divine, a corrective for any devotion that leans only one way.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to chant the full Ardhanarishvara Sahasranamavali?
At an unhurried, clearly enunciated pace, the full 1003 names take roughly 45 to 60 minutes. Reading faster is possible but tends to blur the names together, so most devotees either allow the full hour or split the list across two sittings.
What is the best day or time to chant it?
Mondays, sacred to Shiva, are widely considered favorable, as are Pradosh evenings and Maha Shivaratri. Since the form also honors the Goddess, chanting during Navratri or on a Friday is equally appropriate; early morning after bathing is the traditional time of day.
Can I chant the names in English instead of Sanskrit?
Sanskrit carries the intended sound vibration, so it is the preferred form when you can manage the pronunciation, even with the help of a transliteration. That said, chanting the transliterated English text, or reflecting on the meanings in English, is a legitimate way to begin, and sincerity of intent matters more than a flawless accent.
How is this different from a Shiva Sahasranama or a Bhairava Sahasranama?
A Shiva Sahasranama praises Shiva alone, largely through ascetic, cosmic, and destroyer epithets, and a Bhairava Sahasranama praises his fierce guardian form. The Ardhanarishvara Sahasranamavali instead keeps both Shiva and the Goddess present in the same breath throughout, so its names center on union, shared ornament, and marital symbolism that simply has no place in a Shiva-only or Bhairava-only list.
Who is this namavali meant for?
Anyone can chant it, there is no restriction by gender or marital status, though it is especially reached for by couples working on their relationship and by anyone trying to reconcile conflicting sides of their own personality or circumstances.
Do I need initiation or a guru before starting?
No formal diksha is required. A simple, honest sankalpa stating your intention is enough to begin, though guidance from a knowledgeable elder or priest on pronunciation is helpful if you are new to Sanskrit chanting.
ॐ अर्धनारीश्वराय नमः · May the united form of Shiva and Shakti bring balance to your life.
