Mangal Dosha (also called Manglik, Kuja or Bhauma Dosha) arises when Mars occupies house 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12 of a birth chart, counted from the Lagna, the Moon or Venus. This calculator checks all three charts at once using the Lahiri ayanamsha, applies the classical cancellation rules openly, and explains every step of the verdict.

What is Mangal Dosha?

Mangal Dosha is a condition in Vedic astrology tied to the placement of Mars (Mangal) at birth. When Mars occupies certain houses of the chart, tradition holds that its heat and drive press on the areas those houses govern: the self, family, home, marriage, longevity and losses. Because three of those houses (7, 8 and 2) connect directly to married life, the dosha became central to Hindu marriage matching, and a person carrying it is commonly called Manglik. The same condition goes by Kuja Dosha in the South, Bhauma Dosha in texts, and Chevvai Dosham in Tamil practice.

It matters to say plainly: a Manglik chart is not a defect in a person. The classical reading is about compatibility and timing, most of its effects are held to soften with age and awareness, and the tradition itself supplies a long list of conditions under which the dosha does not apply at all. Those conditions are exactly what this calculator makes visible.

How this calculator works

The check follows the convention shared by the major panchang sites, applied transparently:

  1. Compute the chart. Planetary longitudes are calculated for the birth instant and converted to the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha. The ascendant needs the birth time and place; the Moon and Venus positions need only the date. Everything runs in your browser, so the birth details never reach a server.
  2. Find Mars from three reference points. Houses are counted whole-sign from the Lagna, from the Moon’s sign and from Venus’s sign. Mars in house 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12 from any of them creates the dosha in that chart. A person is fully Non-Manglik only when all three charts are clear.
  3. Grade the severity. The widely used percentage scale assigns 50% to the 12th house, 60% to the 1st, 80% to the 2nd and 4th, and 100% to the 7th and 8th. When Saturn, Rahu, Ketu or the Sun shares the sign with Mars, the traditional severity rises further, up to 250%.
  4. Apply cancellations in the open. Classical texts list conditions that neutralise the dosha. The strongest, best-attested rules are applied automatically and each one is shown with its source. Softer factors are noted without changing the verdict, and folk rules are explained but never applied.

Why houses 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 and 12?

The defining verse behind the rule names five placements: Mars in the lagna (1st), the 4th, the 7th, the 8th or the 12th. Each connects to married life through the house it strikes or aspects: the 1st is the self and body, the 4th is home and domestic peace, the 7th is the spouse and the marriage itself, the 8th is the longevity of the union, and the 12th is loss and separation. The 2nd house (family and speech) is a later addition that South Indian practice adopted; most North Indian lists leave it out, while strict South Indian lists drop the 1st instead. Like Drik Panchang and AstroSage, this calculator checks the full set of six and labels the 1st and 2nd house findings with their tradition, so you can read the verdict either way.

Severity levels

Mars placementTraditional severityClassical concern
12th house alone50%Delay in marriage, friction
1st house alone60%Temperament, self-focus
2nd or 4th house alone80%Family and home strain
7th or 8th house alone100%Obstacles in the marriage itself
Mars with one of Saturn, Rahu, Ketu or Sun150 to 200%Compounded pressure
Mars with two or more of them in the 7th or 8th250%The strongest traditional grade

Alongside the percentage, this calculator grades the overall verdict by how many of the three reference charts are affected: one chart is a partial (Anshik) Manglik, two is a clear Manglik (with Double Manglik flagged when Lagna and Moon coincide), and all three is the strongest form.

Cancellation rules, with sources

Cancellation (dosha bhanga or parihara) is where most calculators go silent. Ours applies these rules automatically and says so in the result:

  • Mars in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn) – Jataka Parijata.
  • The sign-in-house exceptions from B.V. Raman’s Muhurtha: Gemini or Virgo in the 2nd, Aries or Scorpio in the 4th, Capricorn or Cancer in the 7th, Sagittarius or Pisces in the 8th, Taurus or Libra in the 12th, and Mars in Aquarius or Leo anywhere. The parallel muhurta verse (“Aje lagne…”) adds Aries in the 1st, Cancer in the 8th and Sagittarius in the 12th. The two lists disagree slightly at the 8th house, so each applied item names its source.
  • Yogakaraka Mars: for Cancer and Leo ascendants Mars rules the best houses and gives no dosha from the Lagna – Jataka Parijata.
  • Jupiter conjunct or aspecting Mars – Muhurtha Chintamani; the most respected aspect-based cancellation.

Softening factors that are shown but never change the verdict: Mars in a movable sign, Moon conjunct Mars, Jupiter or Venus in the lagna or 7th, Mars in a benefic-owned sign, debilitated Mars (texts genuinely disagree on this one) and combust Mars.

Common beliefs, examined honestly

  • “Mangal Dosha ends at 28.” No classical text gives an age limit. The belief likely grew from Mars reaching planetary maturity around that age. We display it as a note, never as a rule.
  • “Born on Tuesday cancels it.” A folk rule that appears on some sites without any classical citation we could trace. Not applied.
  • “Certain nakshatras are exempt.” The South Indian parihara tradition exempts births under thirteen nakshatras including Ashwini, Pushya, Swati and Revati. Regional, respectable, and shown as a note when it matches your chart.
  • “Two Mangliks cancel each other.” This one is genuinely classical and universally accepted in matching: when both partners carry the dosha, it is held to neutralise for the match. It applies to couples, not to an individual chart, so it appears in guidance rather than in the verdict.

Traditional remedies

Where the dosha stands uncancelled, tradition offers remedies aimed at pacifying Mars rather than “fixing” the person. The most cited are Mangal Shanti puja (often performed at the Mangalnath temple in Ujjain, held to be the birthplace of Mars), Tuesday fasting and worship of Hanuman including recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa, the Mangal mantra, and in older custom the symbolic Kumbh Vivah. These are described here for cultural completeness; nothing on this page is sold, and no remedy is required by a calculation result.

Accuracy and limits

The engine computes sidereal positions with the same astronomy library and fitted Lahiri model used by our Kaal Sarp Dosh calculator, verified against the Swiss Ephemeris across 500 test charts (every sign assignment and verdict matched; two bodies sitting within a few arcseconds of a sign boundary are the only places the engines can differ, and the result flags such borderline charts). The bigger source of error is always the birth time itself: the ascendant changes sign roughly every two hours, so a wrong birth time can change the Lagna chart entirely. When the time is unknown, the calculator says so and grades only the Moon and Venus charts. And a final limit worth stating: no automated tool reads a whole horoscope. For a real marriage decision, treat this as an accurate first pass, not a final word.

Frequently asked questions

What is Mangal Dosha in simple words?

It is a placement of Mars in house 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12 of the birth chart, counted from the Lagna, Moon or Venus. Tradition links these placements to friction in married life, which is why the status is checked before Hindu weddings.

Am I Manglik if Mars is in my 7th house?

Mars in the 7th is a dosha placement, and at 100% it is one of the two strongest. But the verdict is not automatic: Mars in Capricorn or Cancer in the 7th is a listed exception, and a Jupiter aspect can neutralise it. Run the calculator to see which rules apply to your exact chart.

Does Mangal Dosha really end after age 28?

No classical text says so. The popular belief comes from Mars maturing around 28, meaning its expression is held to mellow. The placement itself never changes, so this calculator notes the belief without applying it.

Can Mangal Dosha be cancelled?

Yes. Classical texts list cancellations: Mars in its own or exalted sign, specific sign-and-house combinations, yogakaraka Mars for Cancer and Leo ascendants, and Jupiter’s association. This calculator applies these automatically and names the source of each.

What is a partial or Anshik Manglik?

When Mars creates the dosha in only one of the three reference charts (Lagna, Moon, Venus), or when cancellation factors weaken it, the person is called partially Manglik. Most astrologers treat a partial dosha as mild.

What is Double Manglik Dosha?

When Mars occupies a dosha house from both the Lagna and the Moon in the same chart, some traditions call it Double Manglik and read it as stronger. The calculator flags this combination explicitly.

Can two Manglik people marry each other?

Yes, and tradition encourages exactly that: when both partners carry the dosha, the two are held to neutralise each other, and the match is treated as free of it. Comparable severity on both sides makes the cleanest cancellation.

Is the 2nd house counted in Mangal Dosha?

Depends on the tradition. The classical verse lists five houses without the 2nd; South Indian practice added it, and North Indian lists usually omit it. This calculator checks it and labels it as the South Indian reading so both conventions can be read from one result.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For the full three-chart check, yes: the Lagna moves one sign roughly every two hours. Without a time, the calculator still grades the Moon and Venus charts (the Moon chart is the traditional fallback in matching) and tells you what it could not check.

Is my birth data stored anywhere?

No. The entire calculation runs in your browser. Nothing you type is transmitted, logged or stored on any server, and the result link you can copy encodes only what you chose to enter.
