What is the Krishna Sahasranamavali?

The Krishna Sahasranamavali is a devotional garland of 1000 names of Lord Krishna, each one chanted in the form Om followed by the name and Namah. The names move through his whole story, the cowherd boy of Vrindavana, the beloved of Radha and the gopis, and the charioteer who spoke the Bhagavad Gita at Kurukshetra. Reciting the full list at an even, unhurried pace usually takes 45 to 60 minutes.

Among the many ways devotees address Krishna, the Sahasranamavali is unusual for its sheer breadth: a thousand names threaded together like a garland, each one a small window into a different memory of him. Some recall the butter thief of Gokul, others the flute player beneath the kadamba tree, still others the counselor who steadied Arjuna on the battlefield. Reciting all thousand feels less like a single prayer and more like walking through Krishna’s whole life, one name at a time.

About the Krishna Sahasranamavali

The sahasranama, literally a thousand names, is a recognized genre of Sanskrit devotional literature. Its best known example is the Vishnu Sahasranama from the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata, recited by Bhishma to Yudhishthira. The Krishna Sahasranamavali follows that same structural idea, a long chain of short invocations, but every name in it is drawn specifically from Krishna’s own life and forms rather than from Vishnu’s names in general.

The names gathered here come from several sources: the Bhagavata Purana’s tenth canto, which narrates Krishna’s Vrindavana and Dvaraka years in detail, the Vishnu Purana and Harivamsha, and the Bhagavad Gita itself, where Krishna describes his own vibhutis, or divine manifestations, to Arjuna. Over generations, devotees and compilers brought these epithets together into a single stotra meant for daily or occasional recitation, in the same way ashtottara namavalis of 108 names were compiled for temple worship.

Krishna is worshipped as the eighth avatara of Vishnu, but tradition sets him apart from the other avataras by calling him a purna avatara, a complete descent rather than a partial one. This is part of why a namavali built around him carries a different flavor than one addressed to Vishnu in his cosmic form: it holds room for both the toddler stealing butter in Gokul and the teacher who, fully armed with divine authority, laid out the entire philosophy of the Gita on the field at Kurukshetra.

What makes this particular namavali distinct is how closely its names track Krishna’s biography. Early names recall Yashoda and Nanda raising him, his mischief with the gopis and his flute, and the day he lifted Govardhana hill to shelter Vrindavana from Indra’s storm. Later names shift toward Dvaraka, kingship, and the Gita’s teachings. Chanting the list in order is, in effect, tracing his life from the cowherd’s courtyard to the battlefield, which is why many devotees treat it as much as a remembrance of his story as a formal prayer.

How to Chant the 1000 Names

 1. Prepare a clean, quiet space. Sit facing east or north if possible, place a picture or small murti of Krishna before you, and light a diya or incense if you use one.
 2. Begin with a short invocation. Offer a simple opening prayer or a few rounds of the Krishna mantra to settle the mind before starting the thousand names.
 3. Chant each name steadily. Say Om, then the name, then Namah, keeping an even pace rather than rushing; a mala can help you keep count if you want to track your place.
 4. Use a japa mala if you prefer counting in sets. Some devotees pause after every 108 names to rest the voice and mind before continuing to the next set.
 5. Close with gratitude. After the final name, sit quietly for a minute, offer a closing pranam, and if it is a special occasion, follow with prasad or a short reading from the Gita.

Benefits of Chanting

 • Deepens personal love for Krishna. Moving through a thousand names of his childhood, youth, and teaching years builds a fuller, more intimate sense of who he is, beyond a single image or story.
 • Brings a settled, joyful mind. The steady rhythm of Om, name, Namah repeated for close to an hour has a calming effect that many devotees describe as quietly uplifting rather than tiring.
 • Offers comfort during sorrow or difficulty. Devotees often turn to this recitation specifically when grieving or anxious, since dwelling on Krishna’s presence through so many names can ease a heavy heart.
 • Strengthens steadiness in devotion. Committing to the full thousand names, even occasionally, builds the kind of patient discipline that carries over into other areas of spiritual practice.
 • Supports success in undertakings begun with faith. Many devotees chant it before starting something important, trusting that invoking Krishna in his many forms clears obstacles and brings clarity of purpose.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to chant all 1000 names?

At a normal, unhurried pace, most devotees complete the full Krishna Sahasranamavali in about 45 to 60 minutes. It can be done in one sitting or broken into a few shorter sessions if that suits you better.

What is the best time or day to chant this namavali?

Early morning after bathing is traditionally favored for any long namavali, since the mind is still quiet. Janmashtami is the most significant day for this particular recitation, and Ekadashi and Wednesdays, both associated with Vishnu and his avataras, are also considered auspicious.

Can I chant the names in English instead of Sanskrit?

Yes. While the Sanskrit forms carry the original sound and rhythm, reciting transliterated names in English with sincerity is accepted, especially for beginners still learning pronunciation. What matters most is attentive, respectful repetition.

How is this different from the Vishnu Sahasranama or other Krishna namavalis?

The Vishnu Sahasranama addresses Vishnu in his broad cosmic role across all his forms, while this namavali is built entirely around Krishna’s own life, his Vrindavana childhood, his bond with Radha and the gopis, Govardhana, and the Gita. Shorter Krishna namavalis, such as the well known 108-name ashtottara, cover the same territory in far less detail.

Do I need any special initiation or qualification to chant it?

No formal initiation is required. Any sincere devotee, regardless of background, can chant the Krishna Sahasranamavali. A calm approach, clean surroundings, and genuine attention to the names matter far more than ritual qualification.

Is there a shorter way to benefit from this namavali if I don’t have an hour?

Yes. Many devotees chant a portion each day, working through the full thousand names across a week, or keep to the shorter 108-name Krishna ashtottara on busier days while saving the complete sahasranama for Janmashtami or other special occasions.

ॐ श्री कृष्णाय नमः · May Shri Krishna fill your heart with love and lift every sorrow.
