Batuka Bhairava is worshipped as the young, gentle boy-form of Bhairava – Shiva’s guardian aspect – approached with warmth rather than dread. The Sahasranamavali gathers 996 of his names into one continuous chant, each name opening a different facet of his protection: courage for a frightened child, steadiness for an anxious mind, quick relief in a moment of danger. Reciting it feels less like formal ritual and more like calling on a protector known for listening fast.

About the Batuka Bhairava Sahasranamavali

Bhairava has many faces in Shaiva tradition, from the terrifying Kala Bhairava who governs time and dissolution to Batuka Bhairava, the young boy who carries the same protective power in a far gentler form. The word ‘batuka’ simply means a boy or young student, and this form is imagined as Bhairava before he takes on his fierce, world-guarding role – approachable, quick to help, and easy for even a frightened child to trust. He is usually invoked with the bija Hrim, and his worship sits comfortably inside both home shrines and tantric practice, which is unusual for a Bhairava form.

Sahasranama literally means ‘a thousand names,’ and it is a well-established genre across Shaiva and Shakta worship: rather than one long prayer, the deity’s presence is unpacked into hundreds of short invocations, each capturing a different quality, form, or story. The Batuka Bhairava Sahasranamavali follows this same structure, and like several sahasranamas the working list runs to 996 distinct names rather than a literal thousand – a common feature of the genre once repeated or near-duplicate epithets are set aside. It circulates today through tantric Bhairava-tradition manuals and household lineages that have preserved and copied it for generations, which is also why you may encounter minor sequencing differences between regional versions.

Iconographically, Batuka Bhairava is shown as a small boy, sometimes barefoot, sometimes seated with a dog as his companion, holding sweets or a small vessel rather than the skull-cup and trident of his fiercer forms. In Varanasi and other old Shaiva centers he is worshipped as a guardian who watches over the young and the vulnerable, and Kalashtami – the eighth lunar day associated with Bhairava – is treated as his principal day of remembrance. Because he is imagined as a child, devotees often approach him the way one would ask a trusted elder brother for help: directly, without elaborate formality, expecting a quick response rather than a long spiritual negotiation.

What makes this particular namavali distinct is its concentration of protective and child-centered epithets – names built around courage, guardianship, quick action, and the removal of fright sit alongside the more familiar Shiva-linked names woven throughout, since Batuka is understood as one face of Shiva himself. Each name is chanted in the fixed pattern ‘Om [name] Namah,’ turning the list into a steady rhythmic offering rather than a narrative hymn, and many practitioners treat it as a working tool for a specific need – a child’s nightmares, a family’s ongoing fear, a lingering illness – rather than only a general devotional recitation.

How to Chant the 996 Names

 1. Prepare a clean, quiet space. Sit facing east or north, light a small lamp or incense, and keep a glass of water nearby. A photo or small image of Batuka Bhairava in front of you helps focus attention, though it isn’t essential.
 2. Set a clear intention. Before beginning, take a moment to silently state why you’re chanting – protection for a child, relief from fear, support during illness – so the recitation has a specific purpose rather than being read mechanically.
 3. Open with the seed mantra. Repeat ‘Om Hrim Batukaya Namah’ a few times to settle the mind and establish the connection before moving into the full list of names.
 4. Recite the 996 names at a steady, even pace. Say each ‘Om [name] Namah’ clearly rather than rushing; a calm, continuous rhythm matters more than speed, and it’s fine to pause briefly for breath between sections.
 5. Close with gratitude. End with a short prayer of thanks, a final bow, and if possible a small offering such as sweets or water, acknowledging the recitation is complete.

Benefits of Chanting

 • Shields children from fear and harm. The largest cluster of names in this list addresses a child’s protection directly, and parents commonly chant it on behalf of a son or daughter who is anxious, unwell, or going through a difficult phase.
 • Dissolves deep-seated fear. Several names call on Batuka Bhairava specifically as a remover of fright, making the recitation a common choice for adults dealing with recurring anxiety, bad dreams, or an unexplained sense of dread.
 • Supports physical health and vitality. Names tied to strength, steadiness, and the removal of obstacles are read by many households as support for recovery from illness or general low energy in the family.
 • Invites swift, uncomplicated blessings. Because Batuka is imagined as young and quick to act, devotees describe this namavali as suited to urgent situations – a sudden problem, an exam, a journey – where a fast response matters more than a long spiritual undertaking.
 • Builds a steady sense of protection at home. Chanted regularly rather than only in a crisis, the list is used to keep a household feeling watched-over, particularly by families who keep a small Batuka Bhairava image or yantra near the main door.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to chant the full Batuka Bhairava Sahasranamavali?

A steady, unhurried recitation of all 996 names generally takes 45 to 60 minutes. If that isn’t practical in one sitting, it’s acceptable to split it into two or three sessions on the same day rather than rushing through it.

When is the best time or day to chant this namavali?

Kalashtami, the eighth lunar day linked to Bhairava, is considered the most significant day for this recitation. Sundays and Tuesdays are also widely favored, and early morning or dusk are the preferred times within any of those days.

Can I chant the names in English instead of Sanskrit?

Yes. Understanding what you’re saying matters more than perfect pronunciation, so reciting the transliterated Sanskrit while knowing the meaning is completely valid. Many beginners start this way and move toward fuller Sanskrit pronunciation with practice.

How is this different from a Shiva Sahasranama or a general Bhairava Ashtottara?

A Shiva Sahasranama covers Shiva’s full cosmic range, and most Bhairava Ashtottaras lean toward his fierce, time-dissolving Kala Bhairava aspect. This namavali stays focused on Batuka specifically – his child-like, protective, quick-acting nature – so its names cluster heavily around guardianship, courage, and the removal of fear rather than cosmic destruction.

Who typically chants this namavali, and do I need any special initiation?

Parents seeking protection for their children, and anyone working through persistent fear or health worries, are the most common devotees of this practice. No formal diksha (initiation) is required to begin, though guidance from a knowledgeable practitioner on pronunciation and intent is helpful if you’re new to it.

Can this namavali be chanted on behalf of someone else, like a sick or frightened child?

Yes, this is one of its most common uses. A parent or elder can recite it with the child’s name or situation held in mind during the sankalpa (intention-setting) at the start, without the child needing to be present or to chant it themselves.

ॐ बटुकभैरवाय नमः · May Batuka Bhairava watch over you and keep all harm away.
