Akshardham Temple, Delhi
Swaminarayan · Modern Temple Complex · Delhi
॥ श्री स्वामिनारायण ॥
Beside the Yamuna in east Delhi rises the Swaminarayan Akshardham, a vast complex built by the BAPS organisation and inaugurated in 2005. Its central mandir, carved in pink sandstone and white marble without structural steel, holds the gold-leaf murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan as Neelkanth Varni. Recognised by Guinness among the largest comprehensive Hindu temple complexes, it surrounds the shrine with exhibitions, gardens and a musical fountain.
The mandir carved without steel
The central monument was raised entirely in stone — pink sandstone from Rajasthan and Italian Carrara marble — carved and assembled without structural steel, in keeping with the traditions of Indian temple architecture. Its pillars, domes and panels carry thousands of carved figures of deities, sages and dancers.
At its heart stands the gold-leaf murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan in the form of Neelkanth Varni, the young ascetic of his early life, the focus of worship for the Swaminarayan community.
Exhibitions, gardens and the fountain
Around the mandir the complex unfolds into a series of attractions — exhibition halls that present the life and teachings of Swaminarayan and the breadth of Indian culture, landscaped gardens, and a large stepwell-shaped courtyard.
In the evening a musical fountain show draws visitors to the water court, one of the features that has made Akshardham among the most visited sites in Delhi.
Visiting Akshardham
The complex stands on the eastern bank of the Yamuna, served by its own metro access, and a full visit can occupy several hours given its scale. Security is strict and mobile phones and cameras are not permitted inside, so visitors plan accordingly.
It is closed on Mondays; the exhibitions and fountain show keep their own timings, which are worth checking before a visit.
