The Swaminarayan Akshardham at Gandhinagar is the original Akshardham mandir and the forerunner of the larger complex later built in Delhi. Raised by the BAPS organisation and inaugurated in 1992, it centres on a carved pink-sandstone shrine housing the gold-leaf murti of Bhagwan Swaminarayan. Set in wide gardens with exhibition halls and a water show, it was conceived as a cultural campus as much as a temple.

A monument in pink sandstone

The central mandir is built of intricately carved pink sandstone, raised without structural steel in the manner of classical Indian temple craft. Beneath its principal dome sits the gilded image of Bhagwan Swaminarayan, the focus of worship for the BAPS Swaminarayan tradition.

The monument anchors a large, landscaped campus of gardens, fountains and pavilions. Walkways and lawns lead the visitor around the shrine, and the scale of the grounds gives the sandstone building room to be seen from a distance.

Exhibitions and the Sat-Chit-Anand show

Alongside worship, Akshardham presents a series of exhibitions on the life and teachings of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and on India’s wider cultural heritage, using audiovisual displays and walk-through galleries. They were among the early examples of this museum-style approach later expanded at Delhi.

The Sat-Chit-Anand water show stages an evening presentation of light, water and narration drawn from Indian thought, drawing visitors who stay into the evening after touring the campus.

Worship and the Swaminarayan tradition

The mandir keeps the daily rhythm of the BAPS Swaminarayan tradition, with aarti, darshan and discourse, and serves as a focus for the community’s festivals and gatherings. Visitors of all backgrounds are welcomed to the grounds and exhibitions.

As the first Akshardham, the Gandhinagar campus holds a particular place in the BAPS story, setting the template of mandir, gardens and exhibitions that has since been carried to other cities.
