The Bateshwar group near Morena is one of the great temple clusters of India — some two hundred sandstone shrines to Shiva and Vishnu, built in the Pratihara age between the 8th and 10th centuries and raised again from ruin in recent years. Set in the Chambal ravine country once held by dacoits, the painstakingly rebuilt temples stand as a remarkable story of revival.

A field of two hundred temples

Spread across a low hill in the Morena countryside, the Bateshwar group once numbered around two hundred small stone temples, mostly to Shiva with some to Vishnu, built under the Gurjara-Pratihara rulers. Earthquakes and centuries of neglect had reduced most to heaps of carved stone, scattered across the site.

A patient revival

In recent decades the Archaeological Survey of India undertook the slow work of raising the temples again, fitting the fallen stones back together piece by piece in a celebrated act of restoration — carried out, remarkably, in country long troubled by ravine bandits. Scores of the shrines now stand once more, their towers and porches reassembled, a unique sight in the Chambal valley.

The temples are built in the early Nagara manner, with carved towers, pillared porches and figures of the gods, and the Shiva and Vishnu shrines are worshipped again by local devotees. Maha Shivaratri brings the faithful to the chief Bhuteshwar shrine, while heritage travellers come for the extraordinary spectacle of a temple-field brought back from ruin.
