॥ ॐ नमः शिवाय ॥
The Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, near Kumbakonam, is one of the three Great Living Chola Temples inscribed by UNESCO, built in the 12th century by Rajaraja Chola II. A jewel of late Chola art, it is conceived as a great stone chariot, and is famed for its carved “singing steps” and for sculpture of extraordinary refinement.
The lord worshipped by the celestial elephant
Shiva is worshipped here as Airavateswarar, for the white elephant Airavata, mount of Indra, is said to have worshipped the lord at this place to be freed of a curse. The temple was raised by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century, a smaller but exquisitely finished successor to the great temples of Thanjavur and Gangaikonda Cholapuram.
A chariot of stone
The front mandapa of the temple is shaped as a great chariot drawn by horses, its base carved with wheels, and a flight of stone steps before it is said to give out musical notes when struck — the famed singing steps of Darasuram. Every surface is worked with miniature sculpture, friezes of dancers and musicians, and scenes of myth, in the most delicate of the Chola styles.
A Great Living Chola Temple
Darasuram is one of the three Great Living Chola Temples — with Thanjavur and Gangaikonda Cholapuram — honoured together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for the achievement of Chola architecture. Worship continues at the Shiva shrine, and Maha Shivaratri and the temple festivals keep the ancient sanctuary alive.
