Oppiliyappan Temple, Tirunageswaram
Vishnu (Oppiliyappan) · Salt-free Prasadam · Tamil Nadu
॥ ॐ नमो नारायणाय ॥
The Oppiliyappan Temple at Tirunageswaram, near Kumbakonam, is a Divya Desam famed for a single vow: the food offered to the lord contains no salt. Vishnu, worshipped here as Oppiliyappan or Venkatachalapathy, took the goddess Bhumidevi as his child-bride and promised to accept her cooking though she was too young to season it — and so to this day his offerings are made without salt.
The lord who took a child-bride
Tradition tells that the sage Markandeya wished to give his foster-daughter, an incarnation of Bhumidevi, in marriage to Vishnu. The lord came as an old Brahmin and asked for her, though she was but a small child who could not yet cook with salt. He promised to accept her food unsalted forever — and married her. From that vow the prasadam of Oppiliyappan is prepared entirely without salt.
Brother of Venkateswara
Oppiliyappan is held to be a form and “younger brother” of the lord of Tirumala, and is sometimes called the Venkatachalapathy of the south, so that a visit here is likened to a darshan of Tirupati. The lord stands tall in the sanctum with Bhumidevi at his side, and the sthala vriksha is the sacred tulsi.
A Chola temple of the delta
Built and enlarged by the Cholas, the temple stands in the green delta near Kumbakonam, close to the Nageswaran Shiva temple that gives Tirunageswaram its name. Sravanam — the star of the lord, observed each month — and Rama Navami are the chief occasions, when devotees come for the unsalted prasadam regarded as especially sacred.
