Nachiyar Koil at Tirunaraiyur, near Kumbakonam, is a Divya Desam where the goddess is honoured above the lord himself — the temple is named for the Nachiyar, Vanjulavalli Thayar, with Vishnu worshipped beside her as Srinivasa or Naraiyur Nambi. It is most famous for the Kal Garuda, a stone image of the lord’s eagle that grows mysteriously heavier as it is carried in procession.

The goddess who gives the temple its name

Unusually among the 108 Divya Desams, the consort takes precedence here: Vanjulavalli Thayar, said to have been found beneath a vanjula (ashoka) tree by the sage Medhavi, is the Nachiyar after whom the shrine is called, and the lord stands as her groom. The marriage of the goddess to the lord is the devotional heart of the place.

The Kal Garuda that grows heavy

The temple’s great wonder is the Kal Garuda, a stone image of Garuda, the eagle-mount of Vishnu. When it is borne out in procession it is said to grow heavier as it goes — four men lift it from the sanctum, but many more are needed by the time it reaches the outer street, a phenomenon devotees attribute to the lord’s grace and which draws crowds on festival days.

A temple of the Chola country

Built and enlarged by the Cholas and later the Nayakas, the temple carries the fine granite work of the Kaveri delta, with carved pillars and a tank. Sung by the Alvar saints as one of the Divya Desams, it sits among the dense cluster of sacred sites around Kumbakonam, a short way from the great Sarangapani temple.
