On the wooded Alagar hills northeast of Madurai, the Kallazhagar Temple honours Vishnu as Kallazhagar, “the handsome lord,” brother of the goddess Meenakshi of Madurai. A Divya Desam set among forest and springs, it is the heart of the city’s great Chithirai festival, when the lord rides down to the Vaigai to attend his sister’s wedding.

The handsome lord of the hills

Kallazhagar — Azhagar, “the beautiful one” — is Vishnu enshrined on the Alagar hill (Thirumaliruncholai), a Divya Desam praised by the Alvars and held to be the elder brother of Meenakshi, the goddess of Madurai. The hill, clothed in forest with sacred springs, has long been a place of both pilgrimage and pastoral legend.

The crossing of the Vaigai

The temple’s fame rests on the Chithirai festival, when Kallazhagar sets out from his hill to give his sister Meenakshi in marriage at Madurai. Arriving to find the wedding already done, he turns back at the Vaigai river — and his entry into the Vaigai, on a golden horse, draws a vast and joyous crowd in one of the grandest festivals of the south.

Hill of springs and shrines

The Alagar hill holds, besides the main temple, the Pazhamudircholai shrine — one of the six sacred abodes of Murugan — and the spring of Noopura Gangai high on the slopes, so that the hill is sacred to Vishnu and Murugan alike. Carved mandapas and a sculpted gateway enrich the temple at the foot of the wooded climb.
