The Girijatmaj Temple at Lenyadri, near Junnar in Pune district, is the sixth of the eight Ashtavinayak and the most unusual — the only one set on a mountain and carved inside an ancient Buddhist cave. Ganesha here is Girijatmaj, “the son of Girija (Parvati),” worshipped where the goddess is said to have done penance to win him as her child.

A Ganesha shrine in a Buddhist cave

Lenyadri is a hill of some thirty rock-cut Buddhist caves dating to the early centuries CE; the Ganesha shrine occupies cave number seven, a large pillared hall hewn from the living rock. It is the only Ashtavinayak inside a cave and the only one a pilgrim must climb to — around three hundred steps up the hillside.

The son of Girija

Girija is a name of Parvati, and Girijatmaj means “her very self born as a son.” Tradition holds that Parvati performed austerities on this hill to obtain Ganesha as her child, and the rock-cut image, facing north, is worshipped in that setting of mountain and cave. The image is carved into the wall and worshipped from the rear.

A climb with a view

The ascent rewards pilgrims with wide views over the Junnar valley, the country of the Shivneri fort where Shivaji was born. The cave’s hall, lit by the openings in the rock, has no supporting pillars beneath its great span, a feat of the ancient carvers, and gives the worship an austere, elemental feel.
