The Ballaleshwar Temple at Pali in Raigad district is the third of the eight Ashtavinayak and the only one named after a devotee rather than a slain demon. Ganesha here is Ballaleshwar — “the lord of Ballal” — honouring a child whose unshaken devotion the god chose to bear forever.

The boy Ballal and his devotion

The legend tells of Ballal, a boy so absorbed in worshipping a stone as Ganesha that villagers complained and his own father beat him and flung the stone away. Ganesha appeared, healed the boy and granted that he himself would dwell there and bear the devotee’s name. So the deity is Ballaleshwar, the rare Ashtavinayak named for a bhakta.

Sunlight on the idol

The temple is built so that, at sunrise, the first rays of the sun fall directly on the Ganesha image — a feat of orientation that pilgrims time their darshan around. The idol, seated with a left trunk and set against a silver background, is shown in a form some describe as resembling a meditating Brahmin.

A temple shaped like “Shri”

Rebuilt in stone in the 18th century, the temple is laid out, by tradition, in the shape of the Sanskrit syllable “Shri,” with a hall whose eight pillars represent the directions. Pali lies in the green Konkan country between Mumbai and Pune, a frequent stop on the Ashtavinayak circuit.
