The Mahaganapati Temple at Ranjangaon, on the Pune–Ahmednagar road, is the eighth and last of the eight Ashtavinayak, and the one regarded as the most powerful. Here Ganesha is Mahaganapati — the “great Ganesha” — whom Shiva himself is said to have worshipped before going to war against the demon Tripurasura.

The Ganesha that Shiva worshipped

Before Shiva could destroy the three flying cities of the demon Tripurasura, he is said to have invoked Ganesha at this spot to remove the obstacles in his path — and only then won the great battle. The shrine therefore honours Ganesha in his mightiest aspect, the Mahaganapati, source of strength for even the gods.

The hidden idol of many arms

By tradition the original, most potent image of Mahaganapati — described as having ten trunks and twenty arms — lies concealed in a basement vault of the temple, while the idol worshipped in the sanctum is the form shown to devotees. The east-facing image is seated with Siddhi and Riddhi beside it.

Built to catch the sun

The temple is oriented so that, around the solstices, the sun’s rays fall directly upon the deity — a piece of solar alignment of the kind found in several old Deccan shrines. Set behind a fortified-looking facade with the Peshwa-era craftsmanship of the Ashtavinayak, it is the natural close to the eight-temple circuit.
