Mahakaleshwar Temple

Shri Mahakaleshwar · 3rd Jyotirlinga · Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh

॥ ॐ नमः शिवाय ॥

Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is the third of the twelve Jyotirlingas and one of the most revered Shiva shrines in India. Here Shiva is worshipped as Mahakal, the lord of time and death, in a self-manifested lingam that faces south — the only Jyotirlinga to do so. The temple stands on the bank of the Shipra river in Ujjain, long counted among India’s seven sacred cities.

The south-facing Jyotirlinga

Among the twelve Jyotirlingas, only Mahakal faces south — dakshinamukhi — a form that tantric tradition holds especially potent. The lingam is swayambhu, self-manifested, enshrined in the lower sanctum and worshipped as the timeless guardian of Ujjain.

The Bhasma Aarti

Mahakaleshwar is best known for the Bhasma Aarti, performed before dawn, around 4 am, when the lingam is bathed with sacred ash to the sound of drums and conches. It is the only Jyotirlinga where this ritual is held every day. Seats are limited and usually booked in advance; men traditionally attend in a dhoti and women in a saree.

History and the layered temple

The present temple was rebuilt by Ranoji Shinde of the Scindia house in the 18th century, after earlier destruction. It rises in tiers — Mahakal in the lower sanctum, Omkareshwar Mahadev above, and Nagchandreshwar at the very top, whose shrine opens to devotees only once a year, on Nag Panchami.

Architecture and Mahakal Lok

Built in stone in a blend of Bhumija, Chalukya and Maratha styles, the temple was expanded in 2022 with the Mahakal Lok corridor — a long processional avenue lined with sculpted panels that retell stories from Shaiva tradition.

Festivals

Maha Shivaratri is kept through the night. On the Mondays of Shravan, the silver palanquin of Mahakal — the sawari — is carried in procession through the old city. And once every twelve years Ujjain hosts the Simhastha Kumbh Mela on the Shipra ghats.

Darshan timings and dress code

The temple is active from the small hours, roughly 3:00 am to 11:00 pm, around the aarti schedule. For sanctum (garbhagriha) entry and the Bhasma Aarti, traditional dress is required — a dhoti for men and a saree for women. General darshan is free; quicker darshan and aarti seats are paid and can be booked online.
