At Modhera in Gujarat, an 11th-century Sun temple raised under the Solanki dynasty honours Surya, the Sun God, in carved stone beside the Pushpavati river. Though worship has long ceased and the monument is now protected by the ASI, its architecture and equinox alignment make it one of India’s finest solar shrines.

A Solanki-Era Sun Temple

The Modhera Sun Temple was built around 1026–27 during the reign of the Solanki king Bhima I. It is dedicated to Surya, the Sun God, and ranks among the most accomplished temple complexes of western India from that period.

The temple sits on the Pushpavati river at Modhera in the Mehsana district. Its sandstone carvings, depicting deities, dancers and scenes of daily life, reflect the artistry of Gujarat’s medieval builders.

The Three Parts of the Complex

The complex is composed of three distinct elements, each serving the worship of the sun. Together they form a carefully planned whole aligned to the movement of light.

  • Surya Kund — a vast stepped tank ringed with many small shrines
  • Sabha Mandap — the open assembly hall for gatherings and ritual
  • Guda Mandap — the sanctum that once held the image of Surya

Light and Alignment

The temple was designed so that at the equinoxes the rising sun would illuminate the sanctum, linking the architecture directly to the deity it honoured. This solar alignment is among the most admired features of the monument.

The Surya Kund, with its tiers of steps and miniature shrines descending to the water, is regarded as one of the finest stepped tanks in India and a highlight of any visit.

The Monument Today

Worship is no longer performed at Modhera, and the temple is preserved as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. Visitors come to admire its architecture and history rather than for active darshan.

The site is enlivened by the Modhera dance festival held against the temple backdrop, and the surrounding area gained note as a solar-powered village. The temple lies in Mehsana district and is reachable by road from Ahmedabad and other Gujarat cities.
