The Mahabaleshwar Temple at Gokarna, on the Karnataka coast, enshrines one of the most sacred Shivalingas in India — the Atmalinga, the very soul-lingam of Shiva, said to have been rooted to this spot by the cunning of Ganesha. A great centre of pilgrimage called the Dakshin Kashi, the “Kashi of the south,” Gokarna is also a town of long beaches where the sacred and the seaside meet.

The Atmalinga and the trick of Ganesha

The legend tells that the demon-king Ravana won the Atmalinga from Shiva on the condition that it must never be set down before reaching Lanka. The gods, fearing his power, sent Ganesha as a boy to take the lingam while Ravana paused, and to plant it firmly in the earth at Gokarna. When Ravana could not pull it out, it became Mahabaleshwar, “the lord of great strength,” immovable to this day.

The Kashi of the south

Gokarna ranks among the holiest Shaiva sites in India, a place where rites for the departed and great penances are performed as at Varanasi, earning it the name Dakshin Kashi. Pilgrims bathe in the Koti Teertha tank and the sea before darshan, and the worship of the Atmalinga is hedged with strict and ancient rule.

A temple town by the sea

The old temple, rebuilt over the centuries in the Dravidian manner with Kerala influence, stands a short walk from the shore, and Gokarna’s curving beaches — Om Beach, named for its shape, and the quieter sands beyond — have made the town a meeting of pilgrimage and coast. Maha Shivaratri brings a great car festival and crowds from across the south.
