The Nag Devta Sahasranamavali gathers a thousand sacred names of the serpent gods, from Ananta-Shesha who bears Vishnu’s rest to Vasuki who churned the ocean and Takshaka who guards ancient memory. Each name is chanted as Om [name] Namah, turning simple repetition into a sustained address to every form and quality the nagas hold. Devotees turn to this recitation on Nag Panchami and other sacred days to ease snake-fear, unsettled Kala Sarpa placements and everyday anxiety, seeking the steadiness the serpent itself represents.

About the Nag Devta Sahasranamavali

Naga worship in India is older than most temple traditions we know today, rooted in village shrines to anthills and river-banks long before it was folded into Puranic story. The Mahabharata’s Astika episode, where a boy stops King Janamejaya’s snake-sacrifice and secures a boon that no serpent be slain out of season, is the narrative anchor most scholars point to for why a whole month, Shravan, and one day in particular, Nag Panchami, became devoted to appeasing and honouring the serpent gods rather than fearing them.

At the centre of this reverence sits a small group of named nagas who each carry a distinct role. Ananta-Shesha, the thousand-hooded serpent, is the couch on which Vishnu reclines between cycles of creation, and is also read as time and space holding the universe together. Vasuki wound himself around Mount Mandara as the churning rope during the Samudra Manthan, absorbing the ocean’s violence in his own body. Takshaka rules the naga capital and appears repeatedly in epic literature as a figure who cannot simply be dismissed as a villain; he is treated with the same caution and respect due to any powerful being whose domain borders our own.

A sahasranama is not a biography told once through but a name spoken a thousand times, each one meant to isolate a single quality, deed, or aspect of the deity and hold it in attention for the length of one breath and one bow. This is why the form suits nagas particularly well: serpents in Hindu thought are rarely a single character but a whole community, guardians of buried wealth, of water sources, of the underworld realm of Patala, and a thousand names lets the chanter move through that entire community rather than address one figure alone.

This particular namavali reads less like a court of grand epithets and more like a register of protection. Alongside the well-known names of Ananta-Shesha, Vasuki and Takshaka, it carries repeated invocations tied to shelter, to the removal of poison and dread, and to the serpent as a keeper of the earth’s hidden order. Chanted attentively, it functions as much as a steadying discipline for the one reciting as an act of praise toward the nagas themselves.

How to Chant the 1000 Names

 1. Prepare a clean space. Bathe if convenient, choose a quiet seat facing east or north, and light a diya or a stick of incense. An image or simple symbol of a serpent, or of Shiva wearing the naga, gives the mind something to rest on while chanting.
 2. Open with a short sankalpa. State in your own words why you are chanting today, then offer a brief invocation to Ganesha before turning to Nag Devta, as is customary before any lengthy japa.
 3. Chant each name at an even pace. Move through the list as Om [name] Namah, one name at a time, without rushing to finish. A mala can help mark rhythm, but is not required.
 4. Set aside 45 to 60 minutes for the full list. If you cannot complete all 1000 names in one sitting, split the recitation across two or three sessions on the same day or across the week rather than skipping names to save time.
 5. Close with a simple offering. A little water, milk poured away from any living creature, or just folded hands and a bow is enough. Sit for a moment afterward before returning to the day.

Benefits of Chanting

 • Steadies the mind against snake-fear and the vague, unnamed anxieties people often describe alongside it
 • Traditionally chanted for relief and calm when a horoscope shows a Kala Sarpa placement
 • Draws protective attention during Nag Panchami and through the month of Shravan, when naga worship is at its most active
 • Connects the chanter to Vishnu’s Shesha-shayana image, an invitation to practise surrender and stillness rather than restlessness
 • Builds a quieter respect for the serpent as guardian of water and earth, rather than only as a creature to fear

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to chant all 1000 names?

Most people take 45 to 60 minutes to recite the full Nag Devta Sahasranamavali at an unhurried, clear pace. It can also be split into shorter sessions across a day or a week if an hour in one sitting is not practical.

What is the best day or time to chant this?

Nag Panchami is the single most important day for this recitation, followed by other Panchami tithis through the year and the month of Shravan. Many devotees also keep Mondays for naga and Shiva-related worship, and an early morning hour, before the day’s noise sets in, is generally preferred.

Can I chant the names in English instead of Sanskrit?

Yes. The names themselves are Sanskrit, but reciting them from a clear transliteration is entirely acceptable if you cannot read Devanagari. What matters most in this practice is steady attention and sincerity, not a specific accent.

How is this different from your Kala Sarpa Dosha remedies?

Our Kala Sarpa Dosha calculator is an astrological tool that reads a birth chart and reports a specific planetary configuration along with its general remedial measures. This Sahasranamavali is a devotional practice in its own right, a naming and honouring of the serpent gods, which anyone can take up regardless of whether that particular dosha appears in their chart.

Do I need a guru’s permission to chant this?

Reciting the thousand names as a devotional practice is open to anyone and needs no formal initiation. Where naga worship shades into more intense tantric sadhana involving fierce forms or specific ritual conditions, that deeper work is traditionally taken up only under a qualified guru’s direct guidance.

What if I mispronounce a name while chanting?

A sincere, attentive recitation matters far more than flawless pronunciation. If you stumble on a name, simply continue; the tradition values the steadiness of the practice over perfect delivery.

ॐ नमोऽस्तु सर्पेभ्यः · May the Nag Devta protect your family from every fear and harm.
