The Sri Padmavathi Temple at Tiruchanur, near Tirupati, is dedicated to Padmavathi — the goddess Lakshmi as the consort of Lord Venkateswara of Tirumala. By long custom, pilgrims to the hill of Venkateswara first seek the blessing of the goddess here, for a darshan of the lord is held to be complete only after worshipping his divine consort.

The goddess of the golden lotus

Padmavathi, also called Alamelu Manga, is Lakshmi who is said to have appeared from a golden lotus in the temple tank, the Padma Sarovaram. As the consort of Venkateswara, she is the goddess of fortune and grace, and her shrine at Tiruchanur is among the most visited devi temples of the south.

Worshipped before Tirumala

Tradition holds that a pilgrimage to Tirumala is incomplete without first taking darshan of Padmavathi at Tiruchanur. Many devotees therefore visit the goddess on their way to the hill, offering at her feet before climbing to Venkateswara — a sequence woven into the great Tirupati pilgrimage.

The Panchami Teertham festival

The temple’s grandest festival is the annual Panchami Teertham, when the goddess is taken in procession and a sacred bathing is performed at the temple tank, drawing huge crowds. The shrine is maintained, like Tirumala, by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams.
