The Virupaksha Temple at Hampi is the oldest and still-living heart of the ruined city of Vijayanagara, dedicated to Shiva as Virupaksha, lord of the goddess Pampa. While the great city around it fell to ruin, worship at Virupaksha has never ceased, and its towering gopuram rises above the Tungabhadra as it has for centuries, a UNESCO World Heritage shrine that is also a daily place of prayer.

The lord of Pampa

Shiva is worshipped here as Virupaksha, the consort of Pampa, the local goddess of the Tungabhadra, from whose old name Pampa-kshetra the region of Hampi descends. The shrine’s origins reach back well before the rise of Vijayanagara, and the temple grew with the great empire until it became the chief sanctuary of its capital.

A temple that never closed

When Vijayanagara was sacked in 1565 and its palaces and temples left to ruin, worship at Virupaksha alone continued unbroken, and it continues to this day — a living shrine amid a city of stone. Its eastern gopuram, rising in nine tiers some fifty metres, looms over the bazaar street and the river, and a chamber of the temple famously casts an inverted shadow-image of the tower through a pinhole, an early instance of the camera obscura.

Heart of the ruined city

Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagara empire, is a vast UNESCO World Heritage landscape of temples, palaces and boulder-strewn hills along the Tungabhadra, and Virupaksha is its living centre. The annual Pampa-Virupaksha car festival fills the bazaar with the great temple chariot, and pilgrims and travellers gather from across the world.
