Vaitheeswaran Koil in Tamil Nadu is the temple of Shiva as Vaidyanatha, “the divine physician”, where devotees come to pray for healing of body and mind. It is also the Navagraha shrine for the planet Angaraka (Mars), and the surrounding town is famous as a centre of Naadi astrology — the reading of destinies inscribed on ancient palm leaves.

Shiva as the divine physician

Here Shiva is Vaidyanatha (Vaitheeswaran), the lord of medicine, and the whole temple is shaped around healing. Pilgrims bathe in the temple tank, the Siddhamirtham, said to hold the nectar of cure, and offer balls of jaggery and pepper, and sacred ash called thiruchandu, praying for relief from illness. The consort, Thaiyalnayaki, is believed to hold medicinal oil and to comfort the suffering.

The Angaraka (Mars) connection

Vaitheeswaran Koil is the parihara sthala for Angaraka, the planet Mars (Chevvai or Mangal), one of the cluster of Navagraha temples in the Kaveri delta. Those advised in their horoscope to propitiate Mars — for marriage delays, debts or health — come here to worship, since Angaraka himself is said to have been cured of leprosy by bathing in the temple tank.

Muthukumaraswamy and the Ramayana link

Within the temple is the much-loved shrine of Murugan as Selva Muthukumaraswamy, holding the vel with which, by tradition, he was worshipped here. The site is also tied to the Ramayana: it is held to be where the last rites of the bird Jatayu, who fell fighting Ravana to save Sita, were performed by Rama — deepening the temple’s association with healing and release.

Naadi astrology and the town

The town around the temple is one of the best-known homes of Naadi jyotisham, the tradition in which a person’s life is said to be already written on bundles of palm-leaf manuscripts, located by the reader from a thumbprint. Pilgrims often combine a Naadi reading with worship at the temple, and the streets are lined with the families who keep the leaves.
