Tarakeshwar Temple (Baba Taraknath)
Shiva (Baba Taraknath) • Tarakeswar, Hooghly, West Bengal
॥ ॐ नमः शिवाय ॥
Tarakeshwar Temple is the foremost Shaiva pilgrimage of southern Bengal, where Shiva is worshipped as Baba Taraknath over a swayambhu linga. The aatchala-style temple was built in 1729 by Raja Bharamalla, and each Shravan it draws lakhs of saffron-clad devotees who carry Ganga water to bathe the linga.
Baba Taraknath and the swayambhu linga
The deity of Tarakeshwar is Shiva in the form of Baba Taraknath, worshipped over a self-manifested (swayambhu) linga. The shrine has long been counted among the most revered Shiva temples of Bengal, and the name Taraknath — the deliverer — speaks to the devotion poured out here.
Daily worship follows the abhishek of the linga with water, milk and Ganga jal, the offering of bel leaves and flowers, and the lighting of lamps. The temple’s prestige draws pilgrims from across Bengal seeking the blessing and intercession of the lord.
The temple of 1729
The present temple was built in 1729 by Raja Bharamalla, in the aatchala style characteristic of Bengal — a curved, hut-derived roof form rising in tiers above the sanctum. The architecture roots the shrine firmly in the regional building tradition rather than in pan-Indian temple forms.
Around the main shrine the complex has grown over the centuries with subsidiary structures, tanks and dharamshalas to serve the great festival crowds, while the 18th-century core remains the focus of worship.
Shravani Mela and the festivals
The Shravani Mela is the temple’s defining event. Through the month of Shravan, lakhs of saffron-clad bhola devotees carry Ganga water from Baidyabati on the Hooghly and walk to Tarakeswar to pour it over the linga, the roads filling with the chant of Bol Bom.
The spring Gajan of Shiva, kept in the month of Chaitra, is another major observance, with devotees undertaking severe vows and austerities. Maha Shivaratri too brings night-long worship and dense crowds for darshan.
Visiting Tarakeswar
Tarakeswar lies in Hooghly district and is well connected to Kolkata and Howrah by rail and road, with a dedicated rail line long serving the pilgrim traffic. The journey from Baidyabati is the route the Shravan walkers take with their water pots.
Pilgrims should expect very heavy crowds and long darshan queues in Shravan and on Shivaratri. Modest dress, removal of footwear and the usual temple etiquette apply; offerings of water, bel leaves and flowers are welcome.
