Crowning the great Rockfort of Tiruchirapalli, the Uchi Pillayar Temple is a Ganesha shrine atop an 83-metre rock that rises sheer above the city. Reached by a climb of over four hundred steps cut into the stone, the temple commands a sweeping view of the Kaveri and the island of Srirangam, and is bound to the legend of how the lord came to rest upon the summit.

The lord on the summit

“Uchi Pillayar” means the Ganesha on the height. Legend tells that when Vibhishana, brother of Ravana, was carrying the image of Ranganatha to Lanka, he set it down at Srirangam against the warning never to let it touch the ground; Ganesha, in the form of a cowherd boy, had tricked him into doing so, then fled to the top of the rock — and there, struck by Vibhishana, the boy-lord remained, worshipped ever since as Uchi Pillayar.

A temple cut into the rock

The Rockfort is an ancient outcrop of some of the oldest stone on earth, and the Pallava king Mahendravarman cut cave-temples into its flanks in the 7th century. The climb to the Ganesha at the summit passes the great Thayumanaswamy (Shiva) cave-shrine on the way, and emerges to wide views over Tiruchirapalli, the Kaveri and the gopurams of Srirangam.

Guardian above the city

Uchi Pillayar watches over Tiruchirapalli from his height, sought by devotees who make the steep climb for his blessing. Vinayaka Chaturthi is the great festival, and the temple is busy through the year with pilgrims and visitors drawn by both the lord and the panorama from the top of the rock.
