The Pillaiyarpatti Temple in Sivaganga district is one of the oldest Ganesha shrines of Tamil Nadu, a rock-cut cave temple whose image of Karpaga Vinayagar was carved into the living stone in the early centuries of the Tamil land. With a trunk curving to the right and only two arms in the ancient manner, the lord has been worshipped here for some fourteen centuries.

A Ganesha carved in the rock

The presiding Karpaga Vinayagar is hewn in relief from the rock of a low hill, a tall image with the trunk turned to the right (valampuri) and two arms, in the early Tamil style that predates the later many-armed forms. Inscriptions in the cave record gifts from the 4th to 7th centuries, marking Pillaiyarpatti among the oldest of all Ganesha temples.

The cave of the Pandyas

The rock-cut shrine belongs to the cave-temple tradition of the Pandya country, with figures of Shiva and other deities carved alongside the great Ganesha, and old Tamil-Brahmi and Vatteluttu inscriptions on its walls. The temple grew over the centuries with added halls and a tank, around the ancient carved sanctum.

The boon-giving lord

“Karpaga Vinayagar” means the wish-granting Ganesha, the lord who gives like the celestial Karpaga tree, and devotees come to him for the fulfilment of vows. Vinayaka Chaturthi is the great festival, when the ancient cave-lord is honoured with processions in the temple-town that takes its very name, Pillaiyarpatti, from the lord (Pillaiyar).
