The Ranganathaswamy Temple of Srirangam is the foremost of the 108 Divya Desams and the largest functioning Hindu temple in the world. On an island in the Kaveri at Tiruchirapalli, Vishnu reclines as Ranganatha within seven concentric enclosures and twenty-one gateway towers — the tallest of which soars to seventy-three metres, the highest temple tower in Asia. To Vaishnavas it is Bhuloka Vaikuntha, heaven upon earth.

Heaven on earth

Ranganatha lies in cosmic sleep upon the serpent Adisesha in the innermost sanctum, the Antya Ranga — the last of the three island Rangas of the Kaveri. Held to be the most sacred of all Vishnu shrines, Srirangam is called Bhuloka Vaikuntha, the heaven of this world, and the seat from which the great teacher Ramanuja shaped the Sri Vaishnava faith.

A temple-city of seven walls

The temple spreads over more than six hundred thousand square metres within seven concentric prakaram walls, a true temple-city with streets, markets and homes inside its outer enclosures. Twenty-one gopurams pierce the walls, and the southern Rajagopuram, completed in the 1980s, rises about seventy-three metres — among the tallest temple towers in the world. The thousand-pillared hall and the carved horse-pillars are among the finest works of Vijayanagara sculpture.

The gate of heaven

Vaikunta Ekadashi is Srirangam’s supreme festival: for twenty-one days the lord is worshipped, and on the great day the Paramapada Vasal, the “gate of heaven,” is opened, through which lakhs of pilgrims pass in the belief that to do so is to walk the path to liberation. Built and enriched across the Chola, Pandya, Hoysala and Vijayanagara ages, the temple has been a living centre of devotion for more than a thousand years.
