The Sarangapani Temple is the largest Vishnu shrine in Kumbakonam and one of the most revered Divya Desams, dedicated to the lord as Sarangapani — he who bears the bow Saranga. Its towering eleven-tiered Rajagopuram, among the tallest in the Kaveri delta, rises over a sanctum built in the shape of a chariot drawn by horses and elephants.

The lord of the bow

Sarangapani is Vishnu holding Saranga, his great bow, and tradition tells that he descended to earth at the request of the sage Hemarishi, emerging from the Potramarai tank. The lord reclines and is worshipped in a sanctum conceived as his celestial chariot, a distinctive feature found at few other temples.

A chariot carved in stone

The inner shrine is shaped as a ratha, a temple-chariot, complete with carved wheels, horses and elephants, so that the sanctum itself becomes the vehicle of the descending lord. Two doorways — the southern “gate of liberation” and the northern “gate of birth” — govern entry and exit through the year, opening at different seasons.

Tallest tower of the delta

The eastern Rajagopuram climbs in eleven tiers to around fifty metres, a landmark over Kumbakonam, the temple-town of the Cholas. Sung by the Alvars and counted among the Pancharanga Kshetrams of the Kaveri, Sarangapani is the heart of the great Mahamaham festival held every twelve years, when pilgrims bathe in the town’s sacred tanks.

How to reach the temple

  • By road: the temple is in the centre of Kumbakonam, in Thanjavur district.
  • By train: Kumbakonam is a railway junction on the main delta line.
  • By air: Tiruchirapalli (Trichy) airport is about 90 km away.
