Vaishno Devi is among the most visited pilgrimages in India — a cave shrine high in the Trikuta hills of the Reasi district in Jammu & Kashmir. The Goddess is worshipped not as an idol but as three natural rock forms, the pindis of Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati, and reaching her means a climb of roughly thirteen kilometres from the base town of Katra, on foot, pony or palanquin.
The cave of the three pindis
At the heart of the shrine is the holy cave, where the Goddess is present as three natural rock pindis representing her threefold power — Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati. There is no carved image; devotees receive darshan of the rock forms themselves.
The legend of Vaishnavi and Bhairavnath
Tradition tells of the Goddess taking the form of Vaishnavi and retreating into the Trikuta cave, pursued by Bhairavnath. She slew him at the cave mouth, and by his dying wish his shrine stands higher up the hill — a yatra to Vaishno Devi is held complete only after visiting the Bhairavnath temple above.
The yatra from Katra
The pilgrimage begins at Katra and climbs about thirteen kilometres past Banganga, Charanpaduka and the half-cave of Ardhkuwari to Sanjichhat and the Bhawan. Pilgrims walk, or take ponies, palanquins, battery cars, and a helicopter runs between Katra and Sanjichhat.
The Shrine Board and facilities
Since 1986 the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board has managed the yatra — the track, free registration with a yatra slip, cloakrooms, food and medical posts — making one of the world’s busiest pilgrimages remarkably well organised.
Best time and festivals
The shrine receives pilgrims year round, but Navratri in spring and autumn is the most fervent, when the hill fills with devotees. Summer and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for the climb.
Darshan and timings
Darshan continues through much of the day and night, with the queue managed in batches. Bags, leather items, and several other articles are restricted near the cave and are best left in the cloakrooms at the Bhawan.
