Baidyanath Temple

Baba Baidyanath Dham · Jyotirlinga & Shakti Peetha · Deoghar, Jharkhand

॥ ॐ नमः शिवाय ॥

Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar is among the most visited of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and is counted as a Shakti Peetha as well. Set in the Santhal Parganas of Jharkhand, the shrine is the goal of the Shravani Mela, when millions of saffron-clad kanwariyas walk from Sultanganj carrying Ganga water to bathe the lingam of Baba Baidyanath.

A Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha

Deoghar is revered on two counts: as the Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga, the healer form of Shiva, and as a Shakti Peetha where, in tradition, the heart of Sati fell. For this reason the town is also called Hardapeetha, and Shiva here is worshipped as the divine physician.

The Shravani Mela and the Kanwar route

Through the month of Shravan a continuous stream of devotees carries Ganga water collected at Sultanganj, about 105 km away, and walks barefoot to Deoghar to pour it over the lingam. The Shravani Mela is one of the largest annual gatherings of pilgrims anywhere in the world.

The temple complex and the Panchshul

The main shrine stands among a cluster of around twenty-two temples inside a walled courtyard. A distinctive feature is the Panchshul — a set of five tridents crowning the temples, found at very few other shrines and tied to local protective traditions.

The Gathbandhan tradition

Devotees tie a length of cloth linking the Baidyanath shrine to the adjoining Parvati temple, a custom called Gathbandhan that stands for the union of Shiva and Shakti and is sought especially for harmony in marriage.

Architecture

Built in the Nagara style and rebuilt over the centuries, the temple carries a tall curvilinear shikhara above the sanctum. It is the compact, crowded courtyard — rather than sheer scale — that gives Baba Dham its intense devotional atmosphere.

Darshan timings

The temple usually opens around 4:00 am and closes by mid-afternoon, reopening in the evening from about 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm; during Shravan these hours are extended greatly to handle the crowds. Entry is free, with paid expedited darshan (sheeghra darshanam) available.

Tips for your visit

  • Outside Shravan, weekday mornings are far easier for darshan.
