Mantralayam, on the bank of the Tungabhadra in Kurnool district, is the great seat of Guru Raghavendra Swamy, the 17th-century saint of the Madhva tradition whose brindavana — the sacred samadhi in which he entered living meditation — is venerated by countless devotees as a living presence. One of the most-visited guru shrines in southern India, it is a place of healing, learning and unbroken devotion.

The living brindavana

Raghavendra Swamy, a saint and scholar of the Dvaita philosophy of Madhvacharya, is believed to have entered his brindavana alive in 1671, taking up a meditation that devotees hold continues to this day. The shrine over his samadhi is the heart of Mantralayam, and pilgrims come in the faith that the guru still hears and answers from within it.

A guru of healing and learning

Revered as an incarnation of devotion and wisdom, Raghavendra Swamy is sought for relief from illness, hardship and doubt, and his life of scholarship and miracle is retold across the south. The mutt he led continues as a centre of Madhva learning, and his story has spread far beyond his own tradition.

On the bank of the Tungabhadra

The town sits beside the Tungabhadra river, and the great annual Aradhana — marking the days around the saint’s entry into the brindavana — fills Mantralayam with pilgrims, music and the feeding of thousands. Through the year the shrine keeps a steady stream of devotees from Andhra, Karnataka and beyond.
