The Ragigudda Anjaneya Temple is one of Bengaluru’s most popular shrines, set on a granite outcrop in Jayanagar and dedicated to Sri Anjaneya, the form of Hanuman. Founded in 1969, it has grown into a busy temple complex that also houses shrines to Shiva and other deities, drawing large crowds every Saturday and on Hanuman Jayanti.

A temple on a rock of ragi

The temple takes its name from the small rocky hill — gudda — on which it stands; “Ragigudda” recalls the millet (ragi) once grown around it. The natural granite outcrop, common to old Bengaluru, raises the shrine above the surrounding neighbourhood and gives it a calm setting of rock and greenery in the middle of the city.

Sri Anjaneya, the presiding deity

The main shrine enshrines Hanuman as Anjaneya, worshipped for strength, courage and protection. The image draws devotees who recite the Hanuman Chalisa and tie offerings in thanks for prayers fulfilled. As with Hanuman temples across India, Saturday is the special day, and the queues are longest then and on Tuesday evenings.

A growing complex of shrines

Beyond the central Anjaneya shrine, the complex has expanded over the decades to include a Shiva temple and shrines to other deities, with carved gateways and pillared halls added by the trust that manages it. Cultural programmes, devotional music and discourses are held here, making it a community centre as much as a temple.

Hanuman Jayanti and festivals

Hanuman Jayanti, the birth celebration of Hanuman, is the temple’s biggest occasion, marked by special pujas, recitation and the distribution of prasad to large gatherings. The temple is also active through the Karnataka festival calendar, with decorations and crowds on major days, while keeping a steady rhythm of daily worship.

How to reach the temple

  • By Metro: the Bengaluru Metro Green Line serves Jayanagar and the southern neighbourhoods close to the temple.
  • By road: the temple is in Jayanagar / JP Nagar, south Bengaluru, well connected by bus and cab.
  • By air: Kempegowda International Airport is about 40 km to the north.
