Diwali – The Festival of lights

Diwali is just a few days away so get the best out of the festive season and enjoy this time of the year. People in India become joyous and happy and celebrate this festival with great gusto and pomp.

Diwali comes from the world Deepawali which also means Row of Lights. So the festival of Diwali is also called the Festival of Lights Diwali is the other name for this festival of lights in the northern part of India. In South India, the festival is called Deepavali.

Diwali is a five-day festival that is spread over five days. The first day is Dhanteras when everyone invokes the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi for success and prosperity besides wealth. Choti Diwali is the second day and this is also called Small Diwali or Naraka Chaturdashi in many states. it is known as Kali Chaudas in some states. Legend has it that Narakasura was an evil demon who was killed on this day. People thus worship Lord Rama and Goddess Lakshmi on this day. the third day is the main day of Diwali. This is the day when the devotees visit temples and worship and pray for success and prosperity in life. Lord Ganesha is also invoked on this day and everyone prays for successful endeavors thus removing all obstacles. An aarti is performed with oil lamps, cotton wicks and songs sung in praise of the goddess. All Indian houses have a lot of oil lamps and diyas all around the house during Diwali. Diwali is also the time when one sees a lot of colourful lanterns hung outside the front doors of all houses. Thus, it is an air of festivity all around and there is only celebration all over. Firecrackers are burst by all, and everyone likes to see the display of fireworks.
Padwa is the fourth day and is known by the name of Annakoot or Govardhan Puja. Legend has it that Lord Krishna defeated the God of Rain and heavens Lord Indra on this day. It is said that Lord Krishna lifted Mount Govardhana on this day and thus saved everyone from getting affected by the floods. People thus cook a lot of food on this day. There is another legend that the demon king Bali was defeated by Lord Vishnu on this day.

Then we have Bhaiduj which is the fifth and the last day and is also called Bhai dooj. This is known by the other name of Yama Dwitiya. This is the day when sisters and brothers meet each other to strengthen the relations. It is said that Yami was the sister of the god of Death Lord Yama. Sisters pray for the well being of the brothers on this day.

Diwali takes us from darkness to light and this is a light that gives us the power to commit ourselves to good actions and deeds. Diwali brings you closer to divinity. Lights illuminate all corners of the cities and Diwali is thus filled with a lot of hope, togetherness and joy.
